CUI has six faculties, 22 Departments working in its seven campuses. The complete distribution is presented as below:

The Department of Computer Science was established in 1999 at Islamabad and enrolled the pioneer batch of students in Fall 1999. The department made a modest beginning and is now proud of its excellent facilities and internationally qualified faculty members (475 in total) along with its presence at all 8 Campuses of CUI.

The department aims to impart competitive skills in effective development and application of modern technology to groom its students as excellent programmers, outstanding researchers, extra ordinary analysts and innovative designers. It is aware of everyday breakthroughs in modern technology and thus committed to equipping and imparting our students with advanced competencies required for managing the growing needs of science and technology, especially computer sciences, in almost every professional field today.

Research activities have been given high priority within the department. This has resulted in national and international recognition for faculty and students alike. A number of research papers of national and international repute have been published in leading impact factor journals and presented at conferences all over the world. The department has dedicated research groups working in the areas of networks, cloud computing, databases, robotics, web semantics, data mining, algorithms, artificial intelligence, computer vision and security systems.

Computer science is increasingly concerned with the application of core techniques and methods to challenging real-world problems, for examples, in banking, aerospace, manufacturing, defense, medicine, telecommunications, pharmaceutical industries, consumer products, biomedical, intelligence, nonprofits, government, finance, insurance, health care and much more. This shift is reflected in the recent curriculum revisions at the undergraduate level and the research we conduct at the graduate and postgraduate level.

The department offers four undergraduate programs at its various campuses comprising BS in Computer Science, BS in Software Engineering, BS in Telecommunication and Networking, and Master of Computer Science. All these programs are regularly updated on the basis of international trends and market drivers. Similarly, at the graduate and postgraduate programs include Master of Science in Computer Science, Master of Science in Software Engineering, Master of Science in Information Security, Master of Science in Cyber Security and Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science.

Department of Health Informatics also come under the department of computer science and offers Master of Science in health informatics.
The department of computer science has various international linkages with renowned universities of the world. Moreover, the department is actively involved in organizing national and international level events like International Conference on Frontiers of Information Technology, Vision ICT, and Open House etc.

As an interdisciplinary field, Development Studies has a broad scope and encompasses differing perspectives and dimensions as a program of study. Many developing countries has limited success in achieving higher economic growth and poverty reduction due to many factors, of which the most important are the insufficient emphasis on the historical, present and emerging patterns and trends of development and related aspects. The emerging imperatives of progressive change in social economic and political spheres clearly point towards the pressing and inevitable need for developing greater understanding and practical indulgence in the existing and futuristic trends in policy, practice and academic spheres of the subject.

Based on the assessment of market needs and the present and future emerging trends in the various fields for professional job opportunities, the Department of Development Studies established in 2004 at COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI), Abbottabad Campus. The department is offering five degree programs as:

  • Bachelors of Science in Development Studies
  • Masters of Development Studies
  • Master of Science in Development Studies
  • Master of Science in Conflict, Peace and Development
  • Doctor of Philosophy in Development Studies

 

The programs are suitable for fresh and higher-level education qualified students and also extremely beneficial for the not-for-profit sector and the private sector. Besides numerous other associated fields, the study program will lead qualified students/candidates in securing jobs and assignments in the development, government and private sector as:

For others, including fresh students, the knowledge and skills gained in the development studies programs can lead qualified candidates/students to professional careers encompassing a wide range of current and emerging opportunities and career prospects.

The department has twenty highly qualified faculty members including nine PhDs.  Along with carrying out the academic activities department had conducted several other activities including research, workshops, conferences and seminars. More than 20 research papers have been published by the faculty in the national and international journals. The department has institutional collaboration with the international universities in Europe and Asia. Norwegian University of Life Sciences, Norway, University of Bonn, Germany, Tribhuvan University Nepal and Ruhana University Sri Lanka are among active partners. The collaboration with these universities encompasses long-term projects that support the above mentioned programs with high focus on joint research; student and staff exchange; and capacity building.

The Department of Humanities at CUI has the highly qualified faculty members of many different fields including English Language, English Literature, Applied Linguistics, Psychology, French, Islamic Studies, International Relations, and Pakistan Studies.

The Department offers world-class teaching and research, backed by the superb resources of the library, e-library and language laboratories. Such historic resources are linked to cutting-edge agendas in research and teaching, with an increasing emphasis on interdisciplinary study addressing practical, educational and personality building issues significant to learners, educators, policy makers, communication professionals, and human resources managers. The Department of Humanities is continually pioneering new ways to teach and assess language, to research written discourse, and to teach writing for specific purposes.

Along with facilitating students to enhance effective English-usage at its best, the department plays a pivotal role in making students aware of their religious and moral values by teaching Islamic Studies, keeping track of the current political and social issues through courses of Pakistan Studies and International Relations, and making our youth aware of the humanitarian standards catering to their emotional well-being through Sociology and Psychology.

The Department of Management Sciences at CUI, established in 1999/2000, offers Undergraduate and Graduate programs including Doctor of Philosophy degree program. The pioneering academic programs cover key business and management disciplines such as human resource management, marketing, accounting & finance, banking, business economics, energy management and project management. The focus is not only on the academic degrees alone but also feel responsible for the development of a healthy and smart personality of our students. The department provides the students with a learning environment which is not only fun but is also embedded in our rich value system. For the past 15 years, the Department of Management Sciences has been working furiously and passionately to constantly improve upon both, the quality of education, and the facilities that it provides. This continuous effort has led to the establishment of a system that instills, in students’ qualities such as confidence, intellect, expert knowledge, and an insatiable hunger for success. Such qualities will surely prove to be vital for success in the practical world. The degree programs offered are recognized by HEC and accredited with National and International bodies. CUI, Islamabad, has an excellent reputation for the quality of its research degree programs. A majority of faculty members hold degrees from prestigious foreign educational institutions. Furthermore, the faculty is committed to ensure that graduate students receive appropriate training and guidance to nurture their drive for innovation, creativity, and skills to explore new horizons in their respective fields. The classrooms are equipped with latest digital accessed aides. The research activity within the institute is vast and extends across Faculties and Departments. The Department of Management Sciences is one of the major contributors to this phenomenon at CUI with numerous published conference and journal papers.

To provide students of both institutions an opportunity to develop proficiency in business and finance, COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) and Charted Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) signed a Memorandum of Agreement in a prestigious ceremony held on April 14, 2014. CIMA is the world’s largest and leading professional body of management accountants. It consists of more than 227,000 members and students in 179 countries. They work at the heart of business in industry, commerce and not for profit organizations. CIMA has strong relationships with employers, and sponsor leading research. This agreement will be of special importance for the students of CUI as they will have an opportunity to attain special certification in finance and business from CIMA along with the CUI degree. As a result, they will have an extra advantage to flourish in the corporate world. Furthermore, because of this agreement, students graduating from CUI will be exempted from a certain number of courses while attempting to clear CIMA’s Managerial Accounting degree depending on their respective courses cleared in COMSATS. In addition to this, CUI faculty will also be able to acquire CIMA qualifications.

The Department of Management Sciences annually hosts the prestigious ‘South Asian International Conference’ (SAICON). The conference is an initiative of the ‘Academy of Global Business Advancement’ (AGBA), the South Asian division of which is managed by CUI. In August 2014, the Department successfully conducted the 6th SAICON meetings at the Serena Hotel in Islamabad over a period of three days. The event witnessed a revering success as all invited researchers and industry professionals participated with great enthusiasm. SAICON is a platform through which contemporary and developing ideas on business, economics, and social sciences are discussed and academics and researchers interact with industry professionals. It provides an excellent opportunity for researchers and professionals to network and discuss market changes and transformations which influence market demographics. The forum encourages researchers from all parts of the world to bring forward their research and integrate their research with the needs of organizations and changing trends. The SAICON does not limit itself to researchers but also supports professionals to bring their business ideas to researchers and try collaborating with them to seek answers. The department also has established Centre for Policy Studies and Centre of Islamic Finance. The Department of Management Sciences is successfully and effectively operating across all campuses of CUI.

The Department of Economics aims to contribute at the frontier of knowledge in all core areas of Economics. Currently, it is one of the leading departments in the field of Economics in Pakistan in terms of PhD faculty strength and diversity of offered courses and research publications. The department has 14 faculty members including 10 PhDs having their doctoral degrees from reputed national and international universities.

At present the department is offering BS Economics (4 years) and MS Economics (2 years) Programs. For talented students department offers full tuition fee waiver scholarships at both undergraduate and graduate levels in each semester for the entire study period. The courses offered in the programs are at par with international standards and meet industry needs. The department provides state of the art teaching and research environment. Beside teaching and research, lectures of renowned guest speakers from industry and research institutes are organized on regular basis. In addition, job fairs are organized twice a year to support students in starting their careers.

Chemical Engineering is one of the popular engineering disciplines that bear a promising market, both at home and abroad. The Department of Chemical Engineering at COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) Lahore launched its academic programs in Fall-2005 with a vision to produce outstanding chemical engineers equipped with extensive up-to-date technical knowledge and skillful hand-on-training to meet the changing demands of the society. The Department offers enabling academic as well as social environment to its students to nourish their mental faculties. It strives for producing chemical engineers who are distinguished by their innovative approach, professional competence and managerial skills.

The Department has a rich tradition of providing quality education with an emphasis on applied research and all possible international linkages to uplift the standards of engineering education in Pakistan.

The department is offering degree courses both at undergraduate and post-graduate levels. The engineering programs are duly accredited with Pakistan Engineering Council in accordance with Washington Accord. There are highest number of teaching faculty, and highest PhDs in the discipline of chemical engineering in Pakistan.

The department provides students with real-world experience through conceptual learning, hands-on training on state-of-the art laboratory equipment and industrial internship. Excellent research facilities are available to pursue research / industrial projects under the supervision of distinguished researchers with high Impact Factor. The students work closely with faculty in classrooms and on independent research projects as well as chemical plant design and get plenty of hand-on experience that links theory and practice.

The Department of Civil Engineering was established in April 2012 in Abbottabad and Wah campuses with the top priority of undertaking applied research and modern trends to train coming generations of academia and industry leaders in the subject domain. It is equipped with state of the art laboratories, sophisticated equipment and computing facilities. It offers an enabling environment for dynamic students looking for challenging and adventurous profession in Civil and Environmental Engineering. It has the required infrastructure and facilities that allow students, staff and faculty to excel in their academic and research related endeavors. Accordingly, the graduate and postgraduate program at the Department has been designed to equip students with adequate knowledge and skills in order to meet the latest challenges in their respective fields. The department offers a competitive four years degree program at the undergraduate level based on a comprehensive curriculum designed in accordance with the HEC and PEC guidelines and in line with international standards. The Department also offering a strong postgraduate program in Environmental Engineering

In the Civil Engineering department, real-world readiness begins with a rich undergraduate experience that provides critical learning for a broad foundation in Structures, Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical, Materials, Water Resources and Transportation, coupled with complementary studies in Mathematics, Humanities and Social Sciences. Considerable emphasis is placed on group-based, open-ended design projects to provide students with the necessary skills for creative teamwork and to prepare them professionally for diverse employment opportunities. Preparation for professional practice and graduate studies is accomplished through careful selection of technical electives. The civil engineering program provides conducive and stimulating environment to both students and faculty.

The faculty of the department includes world-class experts in all major areas of study. Members of the faculty are leaders in their fields, yet they remain highly accessible to and involved with their students.

Mechanical Engineering is one of the oldest and has the most comprehensive professional base among all engineering disciplines. Traditionally, the skills of mechanical engineers are required to translate basic scientific knowledge into machines and devices that can handle human and technical problems more efficiently. From the invention of the wheel to the design of steam, internal combustion and jet engines, this discipline of engineering had the most profound impact on shaping human life and civilization.

Department of Mechanical Engineering at CUI Sahiwal was established in 2010. In just a short period of time, the department has seen unimaginable growth in the South Punjab region. The Department is a vanguard of interdisciplinary research and students are encouraged to sample the opportunities provided by the many departments outside the Institute to participate in one of the formal interdepartmental and inter-disciplinary courses of study. Our students represent a rich blend of diverse geographic locations in Pakistan and are ranked among the top tier statistically.

Department of Mechanical Engineering at CUI aspires to produce technically sound and professionally mature Mechanical Engineers to cater our National needs in the 21st century. DME has a well-balanced and modern curriculum including classical disciplines such as mechanics and materials, drawing/drafting, thermal and fluid sciences, design and control and also reflect the latest advances in Finite Element Methods, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD), Numerical Control Machines and Energy Systems and Management. Modern labs, workshops and demonstration facilities complement the futuristic curricula. DME is also ISO9001 certified.

Our goal for students is to give them a high quality engineering education that includes hands-on experience. For this purpose, the department has established state of the art laboratories, an extensive collection of latest books and journals, foreign qualified faculty from world’s renowned Institutes and a very friendly environment. The department also organizes educational industrial trips, internships and encourages students to participate in extracurricular activities. Special Emphasis is also placed to give students a rigorous insight of technical knowledge, groom their personalities and sharpening their communication skills.

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at CUI Islamabad, Abbottabad and Wah Campuses was established in 2001 and at CUI Lahore, Attock and Sahiwal Campuses in 2002, 2007 and 2012 respectively. During this short span it has made big strides by offering conducive environment for studying various disciplines of Electrical Engineering. With more than six thousand undergraduate, masters and doctoral students and more than three hundred foreign qualified faculty members spread across six campuses, it is one of the largest and most prestigious department within CUI.

The curriculum of different graduate and undergraduate programs are continuously updated to keep pace with the rapidly evolving technology and to ensure that the objectives of engineering programs as defined by Washington Accord are fulfilled in letter and spirit. Through outcome based learning it is ensured that the students learn not only the theoretical knowledge required for solving complex engineering problems and at the same time acquaints them with state of the art tools and technique used in practice.

Our Department is strongly committed to undergraduate education. We place particular emphasis on enriching the student experience. We host multiple National level student events in order to keep the student up-to-date with the current trends in Electrical Engineering and broaden their vision. Electronics, Microprocessors and Telecommunications (EMCOT), Robotics Competition (ROBian), HIPE are a few national level project exhibitions organized every year by IEEE students society.

The department’s graduate programs continue to draw from a very strong application pool. Over the last decade, our vibrant department has established a reputation of excellence in research and education innovation. Led by over 80 PhD faculty members, the research programs of the department cover a wide spectrum of interdisciplinary activities, supported by state-of-the-art research equipment and a large set of diverse classes. Different research area actively pursued include Automatic Control, Biomedical Imaging, Communications, Networking, Signal & Image Processing, Computer, Power and Energy Systems and, VLSI and Circuit Design.

The Department of Meteorology is a home of multidisciplinary fields and offer specialties ranging from Meteorology, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Geography, Geodesy and Geographical Information System. The Department was established in 2005 and it is actively engaged in research and teaching activities. Apart from research and teaching, the Department frequently conducts seminars, workshops and organizes national and international conferences.

The Department of Meteorology has the unique place at national level as being the only Department in Pakistan offering MS and PhD in Meteorology. The PhD strength is sizeable with 15 PhD students which have been enrolled and are enthusiastically carrying out their research and course work. Two students have recently completed their PhD dissertation successfully. The Department has multi-disciplinary research groups working on Monitoring of Weather Data, Extreme Weather Hazards, Air Quality, Climate Change and its Variability, Impact Assessment of Climate Change, Adaptation and Mitigation, Earth Science System and Trans-Disciplinary Issues.

The Department is also offering MS program in Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS), whose graduate will have an option to undertake research in the arena of RS and GIS, Agriculture and Forest, Oceanography, Land Use and Land Cover, Hydrology and Water Resources, Glacier Monitoring, Urban Planning and Sustainable Development, Coastal Monitoring.

To extend our educational qualities, and establish linkages with prestigious national and international institutes, research collaboration has been initiated. In this regard MoUs have been signed with Pakistan and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy, Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics (LSGI), The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong, and the Institute for Cartography and Remote Sensing, TU-Dresden, Germany. Center for Climate Research and Development (CCRD) was established in 2014 by the Department of Meteorology with the collaboration of Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), Germany.

The Department of Meteorology has research laboratories catering the discipline of Meteorology, Remote Sensing and GIS, and Astronomy. These Labs are poised with the state of art computing tools. Automatic Weather Station (AWS)is installed to observe and record day to day meteorological parameters. A ground based atmospheric Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) system is also available to monitor day to day air quality and atmospheric vertical profile. LIDAR system at Department is first ever such system in Pakistan. In addition, Department has a high quality digital Telescope to view and conduct research on the distant objects in the upper atmosphere.

After completing MS/Ph.D. degree students have bright future as they may start their career by joining Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), WAPDA, IWMI, IWASRI, SUPARCO, PAEC, NDC, PAF, NESPAK, LMKR, Dam Monitoring, Snow Surveying, Irrigation Department, Planning and Development, Energy Cell, Geological Survey of Pakistan, Soil Survey of Pakistan, Forest Department, Environmental Protection Agency, Pakistan Telecommunication Corporation, Civil Aviation Authority, Academic Institutes and many other National and International departments/Institutes.

The Department of Earth Sciences deals with the fundamental issues related to the Earth.  It offers a 4-year Bachelor degree of Earth Sciences with specialization in Applied Geology and Applied Geophysics since fall 2008 and a 2-year degree of Earth Sciences in the same disciplines since Fall 2014. The program is designed to address issues of applied geosciences with a focus on natural resources, tectonics, geological hazards, engineering, and environmental geology. Specialization in Petroleum Geosciences, Sedi-mentology, Structural Geology, Tectonics, Mineralogy / Petrology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Geology, Economic Geology, Engineering Geology, Applied Geophysics, and Geochemistry. These programs are supported with about 27 full time faculty members, 10 of them holding Doctor Degrees, in addition of 08 others who are abroad for higher studies. As such the Department of Earth Sciences in CUI, Abbottabad has the highest number of technical human resource as compared to any other Department of Geology and Geophysics in Pakistan.

The unique geographic location of the Department in Abbottabad provides the students an opportunity to learn about the geological processes in a real-time active mountainous setting.  As an Earth Scientist, you may be involved in search of hydrocarbons, minerals, and water resources.  You may also be engaged in the remediation of environmental hazards, and prevention and/or prediction of natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, erosion and floods. A good reason to choose Earth Sciences as an academic program in Abbottabad is the opportunity it provides for outdoor academic learning and research that combines field work with the latest in technology for studies related to the planet earth. The students also have the opportunity to benefit from on-going funded research project. The programs are designed to provide a solid foundation in the Earth Sciences for rewarding careers in industry, exploration (petroleum and minerals), government, overseas, and education.

The Physics Department, at Islamabad and Lahore campuses of CUI is one of the best places in Pakistan for research and education in physics.  We are the leading Department in Pakistan in number of research publications (physics) per year as well as innovative research solutions.

The Department offers 4-year BS degree program in Physics/Electronics which encompasses besides core physics areas like Quantum, Particle and Condensed Matter Physics some of the modern applied fields such as:

  • Semiconductor devices
  • Lasers and Electro-optics
  • Modeling and simulations
  • Micro-controllers
  • Signal and image processing
  • Field-programmable gate array (FPGA)
  • Robotics

 

The Department also offers MS in Physics/Nanotechnology and PhD in Physics program. The Department of Physics (Islamabad and Lahore) has about 110 PhD faculty, 760 undergraduate, 185 graduate, and 70 doctoral students.

Our research is organized into four primary research areas, i.e.

  • Nuclear and Particle Physics
  • Laser, Photonics, Opto-electronics and Quantum Optics

 

We have been striving for human understanding of space and time and of matter and energy in all its forms, from the subatomic to the cosmological and from the elementary to the complex.

For more than a decade, the Department has been the source of innovation in physics education and research. In recent years, we have produced a number of quality graduates and PhD degree holders in Physics who are well-equipped and filling the gaps in national and international needs and expertise. Our successes are widely admired and emulated at national level.

The Department of Chemistry, since its inception in 2008, is well-known for its teaching excellence and quality research. The department is comprising of highly qualified and talented faculty of national and international repute, facilitated with state-of-the art research laboratories. Several research groups including, Applied Chemistry, Analytical, Material Chemistry, Natural Product Chemistry, Organic & Biological Chemistry and Physical & Theoretical Chemistry are actively engaged to produce quality research. In order to compete internationally, the department has established effective collaborations with foreign universities and several MoU shave been signed with the universities of USA, Germany, UK, Malaysia, China, etc. The faculty and students are getting benefit from these MoUs by conducting collaborative research to enhance their knowledge and research expertise.

The department consists of 32 full time faculty holding doctoral degree from distinguished universities around the world and this number is still increasing with the passage of time. The faculty is dedicated to impart training to students in their respective areas of expertise in order to make them capable team members. The faculty is also publishing their research work in the world leading peer reviewed journals of high impact factors. Moreover, a large number of books, book chapters, posters and presentations are also on their credit.

The department has a large number of research projects sponsored by different funding agencies like; HEC, PSF, TWAS, COMSTECH, IFS, UNICEF, etc. A large number of students, being part of these projects, are getting benefit in the form of financial support also.

The graduates get expertise and in depth knowledge to interpret sophisticated analytical data from instruments such as NMR, FTIR, GC-MS, HPLC, XRD, SEM, TEM, UV/Visible, etc. The department bears quite conducive and enabling environment with capable management, which always support and encourage to contribute more in the research.

The department offers admission twice a year (Spring & Fall semester). Scholarship opportunities are also available for bright students.

Statistics Department CUI Lahore emerged from Mathematics Department in 2013 and started MS and PhD programs in Statistics. The prime goals of the Department are research and training in Statistical methodologies and applications. Today everyone is well acquainted with the importance of Statistics as it is frequently used in almost all the disciplines of life. The Department is trying its best to enable the students to handle and make prompt decisions individually in any uncertain situation. The students are not only equipped with academics but are assigned research oriented tasks to enhance their research ability.

At present we have 10 faculty members of which 8 are PhDs in different areas such as Mathematical Statistics, Distribution Theory, Survey Sampling, Design of Experiment, Statistical Modeling, Computational Statistics and Quality Control. The faculty members are enough trained and expert to carry out computational Statistics using updated softwares such as R, Stata, SPSS, Mintab, Mathematica etc.

Moreover, the Department administers interdepartmental undergraduate courses in Management Sciences, Computer Sciences and Engineering.

Recently, the Centre for Statistical Consultancy and Training (CSCT) has been launched to capacitate and educate the individuals belonging to various fields like education, medicine, banking, agriculture, business, etc., so that they could produce more proficient results by using the statistical tools with greater ease. CSCT also intends to collaborate with the industry providing various training courses such as Statistical Process control, 5-S, Six Sigma, ISO certification to enhance the industrial production and efficiency.

The Department of Mathematics at CUI was established in 2001 at its Islamabad and Abbottabad Campuses and has been teaching courses of Mathematics in different degree programs. Later, the departments were also established at Lahore, Wah, Attock, and Sahiwal Campuses.

At present, PhD and BS Mathematics programs are running at Islamabad and Lahore Campuses. Department at Islamabad took the lead by producing more than 50 PhDs. Department is offering its MS Program at its all campuses and the number of MS graduates exceeds 300 to date.

The advent of computers and data acquisition facilities has stretched the limits of what is possible in Mathematics to all branches of human endeavor. New developments are taking place all the time; some as a result of fresh ideas or review of old techniques, and others prompted by the applications to new and emerging physical, biological and social sciences, economics, and computing. This has given rise to new IT based techniques of mathematical study and has created new computational methodologies.

Mathematics has such a wide variety of important applications which creates continuously increasing demand for well-trained mathematicians in many fields. It has relevance to fields of aerospace, oil exploration, electronics, weather prediction, management positions, teaching and research, accounting and financial analysis and defense related disciplines.

The school of architecture is a young department coming up with design and fine arts as multidisciplinary, associated and enriching sister Fields. The Department of Architecture at Islamabad Campus was launched in 2005, followed by its counterpart at Lahore Campus in 2007.

There is, as consequence at aesthetic level a unity of all fields of arts and other fields, apparently irrelevant which blossoms into various mediums Painting, Architecture, Films Sculpture, and Interior Design etc.

The department gives extra importance to contemporary techniques and technologies as well as stays grounded with traditional knowledge and usage of appropriate methods and materials.

A considerable emphasis is given to the Philosophy and History to better equip the students for total and comprehensive handling of the professional fields of architecture and Design.

Most of the Faculty members are young and progressive professionals. Their approach to the class room brings fresher prospective and results in out of the box solutions for the contemporary problems.

A relatively young department, the Department of Art & Design (DoAD) is a space that encourages creativity, experimentation, and critical engagement with the social and cultural fabric of the local community, prompting the students to explore and discover their methods through research and hands on creation. With a focus on an interdisciplinary method of teaching, the Department of Art & Design houses programs that allow possibilities of learning within various fields of the Visual Arts for any young aspiring artist. The Design program is the oldest paving the path through its inception in 2010; the Fine Arts program and Interior Design program followed soon after, in 2019. The industrial design program is the 4th to be housed under the umbrella of Art & Design, starting up exclusively at the Wah Campus from 2022.

The Design program focuses on inculcating critical thinking skills, investigating the role of art and design in society and culture, as a medium that can effect thought and bring about change through one’s craft. Here in the program of Design, the students are made to not only think, but to think inventively – to magine out of the box, beyond the norm, and reach solutions through which the communication gap in society can be lessened. Throughout their 4 years of study, students shall explore various mediums of communication and new media design – illustration. animation, film and photography, UI/UX to packaging – before settling on their final field of research and specialization.

The Fine Arts program on the other hand encourages free thought and exploration of various mediums to discover one’s inner expression. By encouraging the student to experiment in various traditional and digital mediums of creation, the program aims to develop critical and analytical skills, so that they may be able to stand forth in the field of contemporary arts. The program focuses on an approach that allows the student to build their own area of forte, picking one of the four majors of Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, and Miniature Painting – and combining it with a varied range of electives, that allows each person to approach their aims in a unique and individual manner, building their own unique style.

The Bachelor in Interior Design program is the meeting ground of art, design, and architecture, where aesthetics meet practical building. With a focus on contemporary techniques and technologies, in relation to traditional indiginous practices, the Interior Design program focuses on the role of the designer in rendering spaces habitable. With a focus on design and art, the Interior Design program employs various experimental methods that allow the student to not only have a solid ground in building theory, but also be able to bring forth something new into the Industry as a graduate.

The Department of Biosciences has been established in 2003 at Islamabad Campus of the COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) and later at Sahiwal campus. The Department has successfully introduced a Four years BS (Bioinformatics) and (Biosciences) degree programs in 2003 and 2006 respectively at Islamabad campus and subsequently was introduced at Sahiwal campus. These programs are highly rated in the country as evident by the fact that we started with 20 students back in 2003 and currently there are over 700 students registered in these programs at both campuses. In addition, we are offering a Postgraduate program as well since September 2005, leading to MS/PhD in Biosciences, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology; Microbiology & Immunology; Virology, Molecular Genetics and MS in Bioinformatics whereas PhD in Bioinformatics will start from spring 2016 and around 200 students are registered in these programs.

Striving for academic excellence, the COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) has emerged over the years as a distinguished seat of learning in various academic fields and the mission of the Department of Biosciences in achieving excellence, is to train and build manpower to develop, design and interpret complex biological research questions and methodologies to solve multifaceted problems. The undergraduates and graduates thus produced will be involved in teaching, as trained human resource for research institutes and industry for improvement of education sectors, health sector, livestock sector and agriculture sector in Pakistan and of region. Our focus is to provide guidance to our students to be leaders in the fields of Biosciences and Biotechnology that are relevant to the 21st century and aim to prepare them for challenging life sciences related careers in academia, research and industries.

Our academic staff is highly qualified and is involved in research in different fields of Biosciences ranging from genetics and epigenetics of diseases such as Mental Retardation, Ophthalmic Disorders, Cardiovascular Disorders, Identification of genomic changes in tumors and characterization of the genetic basis of hereditary cancers prevalent in Pakistani population to Epidemiology and genetics of infectious disease agents such as Whooping cough, Diarrhea, Pneumonia, UTIs, Gastric Ulcers, Hepatitis, Rotavirus and Microbiome associated with different disease conditions, as well as studying the evolutionary changes and prevailing drug resistance mechanism and their subsequent control strategies (development of vaccines & controlled drug release) and rapid diagnostics. Moreover, the research work on economically important crops for enhanced production and sustainable agriculture, Bio-fuels and Industrial enzymes is also carried out as well as in different domains of Bioinformatics field such as comparative genomics, proteomics, next generation sequence analysis, pharma-cogenomics, drug design, chemo-informatics, forensics as well as database and tools development.

There are nine well equipped specialized teaching and research laboratories available in order to train students as well as to carry out research projects. In its short history of 12 years the Department of Biosciences has made rapid progress in establishing well equipped laboratories and gathering PhD faculty (>80 PhD faculty members). The Department is in the process of gaining accreditation for one of its undergraduate program (Bioinformatics) form NCAEC and procuring more sophisticated equipment to provide researchers a state of the art research facility. The Department has over the years secured many national and international funding from HEC, PSF, British Council, European Union and have strong collaborative linkages with world renowned universities and actively producing high quality research publications.

The nexus between Human kind and environment dates back to the creation of the universe and Adam. The umbical cord can never be separated. From poverty and environmental destruction, to war and economic crises, many of the big problems we face as a planet are rooted in natural resources.
Major environmental issues like pollution, global warming, over population, land degradation, waste production and GHG emission, loss of biodiversity and hydrology have adversely resulted in climate change, resource depletion, poor health, mal nutrition, diseases, residual toxic pollution, upsetting the entire eco system of planet earth.

In order to ensure a balance between human development and environmental protection, scientific study of environment-related issues and exploring remedial measures, COMSATS University Islamabad, (CUI) Abbottabad and Vehari have committed, to provide skilled man power to preserve fidelity of the planet earth, and ensure reversal of the over exploitation of natural resources and ruthless degradation of the environment that  has threatened the ecological infrastructure so  essential for the survival of all forms of life.  

Department of Environmental Sciences with its highly qualified faculty, predominantly inducted from internationally reputed institutions established in 2004 at Abbottabad and in 2011 at Vehari campuses, provides students and faculty with an ample opportunity to pursue their ambitions in this broad and multidisciplinary field to become enthusiastic and effective advocates of the environment.

The Department consists of highly qualified faculty and graduate students and research staff working within and across the research fields of Climate change & Ecosystem, Sustainable Agriculture and Natural Resources, Environmental Technology, waste management, Renewable Energy, Water Sanitation and treatment and Public Health. We offer BS, MS and PhD programs in Environmental Sciences, Biotechnology and Sustainable water Sanitation Health and Development at CUI-Abbottabad Campus. At CUI-Vehari campus, BS and MS in Environmental Sciences are offered.

Department of Pharmacy, CUI Abbottabad was established in 2008 and offered Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program which is accredited by Pharmacy council of Pakistan. MS and PhD program in all specializations such as Pharmaceutics, Pharmacy Practice, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacology and Pharmacognosy is now well established and offered in Fall semester. Department has eight well equipped teaching and five research laboratories and one Center of Advanced Drug Research. Department has strong collaboration with Ayub Medical Hospital complex for clinical training and research facilitation of pharmacy students. Most importantly, a highly talented and motivated PhD faculty (18) as well as MPhil faculty (15) in various specializations is involved in teaching and research with the mission:

  • To be a leader in Pharmacy education, patient centered therapy and counseling.
  • To engage in product based drug discovery, innovative drug delivery, nano-medicine and drug policy.

Established in 2019, the Department of Biotechnology at COMSATS University Islamabad-Abbottabad campus is dedicated to providing comprehensive education and research opportunities in the field. Its mission is to conduct exceptional research, provide rigorous training, and create an inclusive learning environment. With a strong focus on academic excellence, the department offers BS, MS, and PhD in Biotechnology. Additionally, the department also offers a BS program in Microbiology.

Equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories and supported by an updated central university library, students have access to cutting-edge technologies in Agricultural Biotechnology, Environmental Biotechnology, Health Biotechnology, Industrial Biotechnology, and Microbiology. The Department of Biotechnology at COMSATS University Islamabad-Abbottabad campus aims to develop the next generation of biotechnologists and microbiologists who will make a positive impact in the field and contribute to the betterment of society.
